In the email we sent you ~ click here to see email again ~ we talked about the person you were interviewing and their personality type. Below we’ll talk about the personality of the interviewer and their personality and how we as interviewers can better connect with different personalities we interview.

Often as business owners / leaders we are quick to see the flaws, weaknesses in our employees or applicants but not so much our own flaws. Our goal is to help you, the business owner, leader, interviewer to better understand yourself.

Why?

As we better understand ourselves and have greater self awareness, the more effective we will be in recruiting … understanding the applicant and our employees.

TIPS ~ If you are the interviewer … (What shape did you choose?)

Why?  If you complete a 3 minute personality survey, we'll help you HELP others.

(Amiable) ~ Chose the Ball and/or Dislikes Conflict

In the interview, this type of interviewer will tend to be really nice, kind, caring and the applicant will likely like you … which is great, right? Well … honestly it might be or it may not be. Our greatest strength as an amaible is our concern and compassion for people.  Our greatest weakness may be our ... well ... our concern and compassion for people.  Often people take advantage of us.

  • (Analytic) ~ If you are interviewing the analytic applicant, they will want “less niceness” and more details, more facts, more about tasks and less about people.  Admire their attention to details and how smart they are.  If you want to hire them walk them through a step by step process of your hiring / onboarding process and help them to see where they are in the process and where you think they could be.  Help them to see how their superior intelligence will bring great value to the company.
  • (Expressive) ~ If you are interviewing the expressive applicant, they will want fun and excitement and to be challenged.  More energy, passion and excitement!  Find out what they love to do, what they are passionate about and how that could bring value to the company and how that will be connected to the role / position in the company.
  • (Driver) ~ If you are interviewing the driver applicant, they will want you to get to the point, be direct, and very little small talk.  More about tasks, goals and how they can succeed.  Help them see that there is advancement opportunities and how you can see and appreciate their drive and ability to quickly see the big picture and how direct they are.
Why?  If you complete a 3 minute personality survey, we'll help you TEACH others.

(Analytic) ~ Chose the Cube and/or Dislikes When Things Are Out of Order

As an analytic, you will tend to talk slower in the interview, focus on details and notice the little things which are important to this applicant that most other interviewers will miss.  This can be really good, but it can hurt you with other personalitiy types different than yourself.  With different personalities, we as anlytics need to be very self-aware of how we talk, how we think and how we process what is said.  It is very different than other personality types and we can miss hiring the people without even knowing it.

  • (Amiable) ~ The amiable will tend to like that you talk slower and are careful not to create conflict.  Focus a bit more on the personal / people side and get to know them, their family, what they like.  They want to feel that you care for them personally.
  • (Expressive) ~ If you are interviewing the expressive applicant, they may not like how slow you talk and how you don't seem to have much energy, passion and excitement!  They may be in a relationship with someone like you ... and you may be in a relationship with someone like them ... which may be good ... or could be not so good.  :-)
  • (Driver) ~ If you are interviewing the driver applicant, they may be put off by your detailed questions and the slower speed upon which you talk, from their perspective.  They really want to get to the bottom line fast, skip the details and determine quickly if there's a good fit and you'll be able to help them achieve their career goals.
Why?  If you complete a 3 minute personality survey, we'll help you INSPIRE others.

(Expressive) ~ Chose the Wavy Line and/or Dislikes Boring Or Not Fun

As an expressvie interviewer you'll tend to have a lot of fun, talk faster, listen fast and make the interview exciting and fun. This will often be great for someone with your personality type but, will often turn other personalities off.  Be careful and self-aware as to your passion and energy and how some people love it, it may turn off other people who may actually be a perfect fit for the job you are hiring for.

  • (Amiable) ~ The amiable will tend to like some of your energy and how much fun you are and how much energy you bring.  They may be a bit overwhelmed with your assertiveness and may become cautious in how direct you come across to them, out of fear of conflict or letting you down.
  • (Analytic) ~ If you are interviewing the analytic applicant, they may not like how fast you talk and how you don't seem to dot your i's and cross your t's and how it may seem that you don't have an answer to the thousands (it seems) of questions they may have.  Yes ... they may not like you ... but if you go slow before you rocket forward, they may actually fall in love with you.
  • (Driver) ~ If you are interviewing the driver applicant, they may be put off by your how you have a million things you are talking about ... many topics ... and what they perceive is a lack of focus on your part.  Be intentional and disciplined in finding out their goals and more focused on tasks and careful about how much people energy you bring to the interview.
Why?  If you complete a 3 minute personality survey, we'll help you INSPIRE others.

(Driver) ~ Chose the Pyramid and/or Dislikes Out Of Control

As a driver interviewer you'll likely be very professional, get to the point, ask them their goals and why they believe they would be successful. You may be too direct, too driven, too forward and not come across as interested in them.

  • (Amiable) ~ The amiable may not like you from the second they see you.  Why?  Well they may be married to someone just like you or may have had a dad or other authority figure in their life and, while they don't know this on a conscious basis, they just don't like or trust you.  Soften things WAY up, don't crush their hand when you go to shake their hand, be nice ... like really nice, so nice that you may not be able to even stand yourself.  We're not joking.  You'll be surprised how this can work and maybe ... just maybe ... this type of personality is just the perfect person who can help you not have to deal with people as they will love it.
  • (Analytic) ~ If you are interviewing the analytic applicant, they will likely like that you focus on tasks, but probably don't like that you talk too fast for them and you made one mistake.   When we say "made a mistake" it's crazy how little of a "mistake" it could be, and they'll catch it and then say to themselves ... "Oh ... he's one of those guys who is so arrogant and makes mistakes and then takes credit for all the hard work I do."
  • (Expressive) ~ If you are interviewing the expressive applicant, they may enjoy how aggressive you are and how low your social skills seem to be.  They may think of taking you "On as a cause" to help you have more fun in life and help you to lighten up.  Do have some fun in the interview and lighten up, laugh at their jokes and get to know how funny of a person they really are.

IMPORTANT: Between the Geo & the Pain Quadrant personality test, there are 65,536 possible combination and it only takes 3 minutes to determine which of the 65,536 types you are.  There are not good or bad personalities!

Every personality will have strengths and weaknesses.  Our greatest weakness is really just our greatest strength taken too far.  We tend to like others who are like us (personality wise) and tend to fall in love with someone who is an opposite personality of us.

What does this mean professionally?  It means that often the person, we work with, who drives us crazy may be the very best person we need professionally to help us see the greatest success in our career.

If you complete the 3 minute personality survey, you'll get a free report and can even talk to a real person, if you want to.

As a Business Owner, what is your biggest challenge?

As a Business Owner, what is your biggest challenge?

Might it be employees?

Let’s say it is employees. Is it hiring employees? Is it onboarding the employees in the best way? Is it training, coaching or mentoring?

Or . . . Is it getting them to think like an owner thinks, rather than an employee?

So … you may be asking “What does my personality have to do with the challenges / problems I’m having with my employees?” Well … that answer might be … everything? As an owner or leader, if we don’t have systems in place to recruit people with a deep understanding of our own personality and the personality of those we are interviewing, honestly, we’re going to say the wrong things, use the wrong words and appeal to things that may motivate us but likely won’t motivate the individual we’re interviewing.

When we learn how to interview, hire, on-board, train, coach and mentor employees according to their motivations, their personality, we will hire more and better people and we’ll hire them faster.

When we learn how to hire, “on-board”, train, coach and mentor employees with a consideration of their personality, along with our own personality and the personalities of those they are working with, it changes everything. And we’re not talking 15% to 20% increases in productivity, but, some have experienced productivity increases over over 60% and a few even over 180% increases.

TIPS ~ If you are interviewing someone who …

  • Chose the Ball and/or Dislikes Conflict ~ In the interview focus on them, their family, interests, hobbies and the team like atmosphere, how much we care about people. Blend in the conversation and we work hard to reduce stress and help people have a balanced life.
  • Chose the Cube and/or Dislikes When Things Are Out of Order ~ Talk slower in the interview, have an outline or diagram of your hiring process, focus on details and notice the little things which are important to this applicant that most other interviewers will miss.
  • Chose the Wavy Line and/or Dislikes Boring Or Not Fun ~ Have a lot of fun with this person. Talk fast, listen fast and make the interview exciting and fun. Find out what they do for fun and emphasize that, as a company, you value fun people, outgoing people, people who like to move fast and make things happen. Lift them up and let them know that the firm could use someone with their passion.
  • Chose the Pyramid and/or Dislikes Out Of Control ~ Be very professional, get to the point, ask them their goals and why they believe they would be successful in the firm. Tell them the firm values direct and assertive people who set goals and work hard to achieve those goals.
  • NOTE: If you read any of the above and say … “But we don’t have a culture like this.” … That's another conversation. The most profitable and successful firms will have some of all the above. If we don’t have some part of our firm which connects to this personality type, then we’re missing something in our company which creates other issues / problems.

If you complete the short 3 seconds survey and would like a gift 30 minute Strategy Session where we could share with you about your personality and how to use the strengths of your personality to better recruit, hire, train, coach and mentor people we would be happy to provide that gift session to the first seven people who reply. So … TAKE 3 SECONDS RIGHT NOW, so you can be one of the first to reply.

So … will you complete the 3 second survey?

Based on our experience, likely not. Why not?

We’re honestly not sure? Is it that Business Owners are cynics? Is it that we have high ego / pride and we don’t want someone else to help us?

I mean, we as Business Owners have a problem that we’re not able to fix … it would seem that a smart person would ask for help, would take 3 seconds to complete a personality survey if there was any interest in actually fixing the situation rather than “over thinking” things.

Hmmm … maybe this will help. I have talked to Mark Boersma and he has agreed to have a short conversation with the first seven people who respond with you about the results of your personality survey.
Mr. Boersma who is an international speaker and author and has coached and mentored many Business Owners in helping them see success where they have struggled in the past. DO NOT procrastinate otherwise one of your competitors may get help and learn how to recruit those top applicants who could be working for you. Just saying.
